"Terrific experience in a unique location."
Overall Score5.0/ 5
The Hotel Millwright is a creatively conceived and beautifully executed restoration of a large building within the 19th century Amana Woolen Mill complex at the center of the historic Amana Colonies just off I 80 in east central Iowa. Also within the complex is the remaining, still working mill and the “Warped and Woven Mercantile Store” where the active mill’s many diverse products are sold. We found the hotel to be a very reasonably priced and convenient overnight accommodation located within easy walking distance of the shops, wineries and cafes of the historic tourist destination of (Main) Amana, one of the seven Amana Colonies established by a German religious group which practiced self sufficient communal living from 1856 to 1932. The Woolen Mill was one of its most prominent and profitable enterprises during that period and hundreds of its machines and weaving parts and equipment decorate the interior walls and hallways of the hotel. The hotel boasts large, high ceiling rooms with single king or double queen beds with large, walk in showers and large sash windows that provide abundant light to the room. The staff is uniformly welcoming and friendly and the entire hotel is very clean and well maintained. We were most impressed and surprised with the quality and diversity of the food served in the hotel’s Indigo Room, particularly because it provides a welcome option to Amana’s many cafes that specialize in German food. We were especially impressed by the fresh ingredients used and the cafe’s bread that is baked on site. Among its many excellent dishes were a breakfast ham, bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, a vegetable flatbread appetizer and a crispy fish sandwich, all of which were among the best dishes we have experienced in more than 50 years of traveling. Great hotel that we highly recommend.

Overall Score5.0/ 5
The room was clean, and the staff was friendly. I would really recommend to my friends and family to stay there. I was glad that you used equipment from the woolen mills as accent pieces around the hotel.

"Had fun at Hotel Millwright!"
Overall Score5.0/ 5
We enjoyed four nights at this unique hotel. This converted woolen mill with all of it's antiques and accoutrements is like staying in a museum. The hotel has an industrial feel, the rooms are spacious and the bathroom is extra large with a walk-in shower and rain showerhead. Front desk people are wonderful and Corey the maintenance manager was so helpful when we needed it. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at the hotel for a reasonable price. If you get a chance to eat breakfast here, the sausage is homemade in house and the biscuits are huge and delicious. The cafe is near a well appointed bar. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings there is an additional bar that is open. They call it a whiskey bar but everything is available there with delightful outdoor seating. There's a fabulous micro brewery directly across the street and a restaurant around the corner that we ate at several times. Many shops are within walking distance.
